Roadhouse, Penalty Spot to battle in TWHL championship
SAMRONG: The Penalty Spot Slammers advanced to the Thai-World Hockey League championship after coming from behind to beat the D'Pelican Inn Flyers 4-3.
The Roadhouse Smokers high-powered offense continued to roll as they blasted the BNH Hospital Blades 6-2, setting the stage for what's sure to be a fiercely contested final series with the Slammers that kicks off Friday at Imperial World Samrong arena.
The underdog Flyers got on the board early as wily vet Oscar Sala skated through the defence, froze the goalie with a fake shot, then calmly deposited the puck after a slick backhand move.
Captain Adrian Meyers banged in a loose puck to make it 2-0, but the Slammers quickly responded as Chantapong Tengsakul tucked home a rebound and Czech power-forward Jiri Vlk added another.
In the third period, captain Geoff McIntyre buried his 26th of the season with a hard wrist shot, and Pasit Jirachi added what proved to be the game winner. Scott Whitcomb scored to make things interesting, but that's as close as the Flyers would get.
Goalie Clement Savard was sharp making 26 saves for the win.
Blades captain Todd Switzer fired up his team with an early goal, corralling a loose puck off the end boards and rifling a shot top shelf.
But Smokers captain Joe Doan responded with a bullet minutes later and Roadhouse opened it up as Thai sniper Tawin Chartsuwan blazed two wrist shots under the crossbar before adding his hat-trick goal in the third.
Pierre-Marc Chouinard and Marko Luis also tallied, and Arthit Thamwongsin scored the other Blades goal.
The championship will feature two potent offenses as the Smokers netted 78 goals and the Slammers 69 during the regular season. The Slammers took the edge with a 4-1-1 record in their season series. www.jogsports.com
