Thailand, Taipei capture titles at international ice hockey tournament

SAMRONG -- The Taipei Typhoon stormed back to win the "Land of Smiles Classic" ice hockey tournament on Saturday night, overcoming a two-goal deficit in the third period to defeat Switzerland's EHC Affoltern 3-2 for the San Miguel Cup.

Team Thailand also fought back in the Asian Division final to oust the Hong Kong Hitmen 4-2 at the four-day tourney that featured 25 teams from 15 countries at Imperial Samrong arena.

The Tokyo Canadians captured the international recreational championship, while Team Japanada won the women's division in overtime.

After giving up two first period goals, the resilient Typhoon pressed the Swiss with a relentless fore-check the rest of the game. John Turner was the offensive star, burying two third-period goals including the game-winner.

Taipei defeated Bangkok's Santé Fe Farangs 2-1 in a thrilling semifinal overtime game to advance. 

Team Thailand went undefeated in the Asian division with strong passing, tight defence, and timely scoring from a variety of players.
