Cabbages & Condoms
Address: 10 Sukhumvit Soi 12, Bangkok
Phone: 2229-4610
New York Times Review

It’s not every restaurant that greets you with an out-of-season Christmas tree decorated with brightly colored condoms and then offers more condoms on your way out. But then not every restaurant combines Thai cuisine with safe-sex education. That just about sums up Cabbages and Condoms, a lively spot serving up simple, yet well-prepared local specialties (deep-fried chicken wrapped in pandanus leaf; sweet and sour grouper) in a decidedly eccentric setting.

Yok-Yor, on the river - opposite the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel.

If you're thinking about taking a dinner cruise on the river then you have a few options. Most are pricey - 800 to 1,500 Baht per person. However Yok-yor restaurant provide a budget alternative. Their boat sails up and down the river for a couple of hours, departing at 8pm, for the price of 80 Baht / person - complete with live band and TV showing muted action videos for those who aren't interested in the food or scenery. Bourbon Street Restaurant

Address: 29/4-6 Sukhumvit Soi 22, Washington Square, Bangkok

The Cajun food here would sell in New Orleans, it’s that good. Seafood gumbo, jambalaya and blackened fish are all outstanding; they also make a mean chicken fried steak and pecan pie. Mains are served with side orders of fried okra, potatoes au gratin, green beans, and of course cornbread. Attached to a bar and...

Lemongrass
Address: 5/1 Sukhumvit, Soi 24, Bangkok

A lovely restaurant that’s a favorite among Thais, especially for entertaining foreign guests. The dining room is tastefully done, with antiques and paintings from the local region. Traditional Thai food is prepared with skill – ask if you like it spicy – and the staff are charming.

BEST BARS AND CLUBS

Bed Supper Club

Address: 26 Sukhumvit, Soi 11, Bangkok

This is one of Bangkok’s trendiest bars and restaurants. Diners share a room-length white-sheet bed and eat from a set menu. The restaurant often has special shows, so check the website for what’s up. On the other side of the same spaceship-looking building is the bar, and the music can be loud enough to make...

Khao San Road

Address: Bangkok

In the 1970s Khao San “Shining Rice” Road in Bamglamphoo, one of the city’s older neighborhoods became Grand Central Station for the international collection of backpackers making their way through Asia and around the world. In the ‘80s and ‘90s it got even bigger, packed with cheap guesthouses and restaurants. This...

Patpong

Address: Patpong Rd, off Silom, Bangkok

The street that gives Bangkok much of its international reputation is really not the place it used to be. Having been somewhat sanitized during the past decade, there’s now a night market down the road’s center, selling everything from t-shirts with typical inscriptions to the latest movies on copied (pirated) DVDs....

Q Bar

Address: 34 Sukhumvit, Soi 11, Bangkok

The original Q Bar, connected to the Opera House in Saigon, was more unique, but this one is trendier. The indoor area and outside balconies offer the chance for intimate conversation as DJs pump international music. It’s pricey but popular with local Thais and expats, and just down the street from Bed Supper Club.

CM2: located in the basement of the Novotel in Siam, this is a lively, popular centrally located venue. It only gets going after 11pm and is full of freelancing ‘ladies of the night’ (Thai and Eastern European). The bar staff also have a terrible attitude. Nearest BTS station: Siam. Cover charge 300 baht, with free drink. Open: 18.30 to 02.00, nightly

Where in lower Sukhumvit can you drink for a pittance SHOPPING-NIGHTLIFE_AREAS_IN_BANGKOK-2009_gand meet interesting, unsleazy farang? The answer is not some haughty hotel lounge, nor some austere restaurant, but this 20-something Bangkok institution - little more than a wooden shack and a few stools that spill across the street. Every night, a convivial blend of expats and clubbers swarm here to dose up on beers before heading somewhere pricier (at 60 baht a bottle Cheap Charlie's delivers on its name). A definite contender for Bangkok's most bizarre drinking hole, be sure to check out the oddities accumulated over the years - animal skulls, tribal masks and other strange curios (the toilet bares a classic sign: 'no shitting'). Tucked away down a narrow, predominantly residential soi, remember also to be a gent and stand aside for passing cars.

For some time now, bars and clubs in Bangkok are supposed to close at 1:00am. This rule is interpreted in different ways by different police stations across the city. You can never really be sure when the bar or club you are in will close – but usually it will be anywhere between 1:00am and 3:00am. Nana Plaza go-go’s are currently closing at 2:00am, whereas Cowboy go-go’s go on to 2:30am. Many clubs around Patpong go on until 3:00am. This rule was introduced to try to curb the enthusiasm for booze by young Thais. But the only parts of the city where the police close down the bars and clubs are exactly the parts where no young Thais go – such as Nana, Cowboy and Patpong. Somewhat bizarrely, the very areas where young Thais go (such as Ratchada Soi 4-6-8 area) usually party on all night.

HAVE FUN, BE SAFE AND ENJOY YOUR TIME IN THE CITY OF SIN!
